Sept 19, 2016(Nyamilepedia)  –– The South Sudan’s newly imposed First Vice President, Taban Deng Gai, left for New York on Sunday afternoon to attend the 71st sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking to Journalists at Juba International Airport before Gai’s team departed, Ateny Wek Ateny, Presidential secretary spokesperson, said that the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai will be representing President Salva Kiir at the UN meetings.

“So he is travelling now as Acting head of state, because he will be acting on behalf of the president, so all the functions supposed to be done by the president of the republic of South Sudan at the UN General Assembly, will be done by the first vice president Taban Deng Gai,” Ateny said.

Ateny pointed out that the High-Level Delegation will explain the progress made so far in implementation of the compromised peace agreement in South Sudan.

Gai is accompanied by senior Government Officials to UN General Assembly at New York, United States of America.

The official revealed that Taban Deng will also hold sideline meetings with several world leaders in order to drum up support for the peace process in South Sudan. He added that the First Vice President will also brief South Sudanese citizens who are living in America on peace implementation and integration of the two armies by May 2017.

“If the armies become one by May 2017, that will give assurances to the people of South Sudan that there will be no rivaling forces which can cause havoc,” he said.

Gai came to power in July this year in what was seen as an internal coup in the SPLM in Opposition to depose the First Vice President Designated by the Agreement of Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

Machar, who narrowed survived 40 days long pursued, has been nursing wounds in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, as Gai works to isolate him and his return to power.

Gai has traveled the East and South Africa in attempt to gain political support and he is expected to do the same in New York, however, Gai has one major challenge and that is he controls no army in the opposition.

His arrival in New York is expected to draw demonstration and public outcry as the SPLM/SPLA in Oppostion chapters in the United States may storm the UN General headquarters to express their dissatisfaction on how Taban claim power from Dr. Machar.

More than 500 people were killed within Juba in July and thousands have been displaced to IDPs camps and refugees camps across East Africa.
