May 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan denied on Thursday reports that President Salva Kiir Mayardiit signed an agreement with authorities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to export South Sudan nationals as domestic workers to the Gulf country.
Following a visit by the President to Dubai last week, rumors surfaced alleging that the South Sudanese head of state agreed with his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to export female domestic workers to the rich Arab country in exchange for financial support.
In reaction, South Sudanese social media users were angered and took to Facebook and Twitter to condemn the alleged agreement saying it represents a shame to the people of South Sudan and the leadership of the country.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, South Sudan’s Presidency denied President Kiir signed an agreement with the authorities in the Gulf country condemning what the statement referred to as propaganda by the unnamed fabricators.
“We came across a posting by [a] South Sudanese citizen on social media alleging that President [Salva] Kiir Mayardit during his recent visit to United Arab Emirates agreed with the UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to import young South Sudanese ladies to work as housemaids in the UAE,” the statement said.
“However, we categorically reject this unreasonable claim by those who fabricated the story. The visit of President Kiir to the UAE was historical and symbolic and has achieved much-desired outcome. Nobody in his/her sane mind would have interpretted the signed agreements and Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with UAE government in negative way,” the statement added.
The statement further urged citizens to ignore the report and “discard it, as this was a mere propaganda.”
