June 2, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan defense minister and senior member of the SPLM-IO Angelina Teny has recovered from COVID-19 and is due to return to office tomorrow, officials with links to her said.

Teny last month was diagnosed with coronavirus disease along with his husband and First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

The two have been in home quarantine since then.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, a office staffer for Teny said the defense minister has recovered from the novel coronavirus and will return to work on Wednesday.

“The minister of defense has recovered and she will return to work tomorrow,” the official told Nyamilepedia from Juba on Tuesday afternoon.

“Actually, the First Vice President has recovered too. All those close to Dr. Machar and who tested positive in May have now fully recovered from the disease. But the First Vice President will stay for another week at home before he return to work this month,” the source added.

South Sudan is seeing a high increase in coronavirus cases. Despite being the last country to confirm its first case of the virus in late March, the country’s cases have surpassed those of Uganda, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo.

As of last week, the overall toll stood at 994. Six people have recovered and ten have died.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been urged to impose total lockdown as fears of devastating outbreak grip the country.
