According to the Ministry of Defence Press Secretary and SPLM-IO Deputy Spokesman, Col. Lam Paul Gabriel the workshop was held at the International Peace Support Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya .

“The Minister of Defence and Veterans’ Affairs, Hon. Angelina Jany Teny on 7/12/2020, witnessed the official opening of the Leadership Peace Building and Reconstruction Course at International Peace Support Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya,” said Col. Lam Paul Gabriel, Press Secretary and Media Analyst said in a statement.

Col. Lam said the course was jointly organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC).

He said it is the “beginning process of unifying the Command meant to command the Necessary Unified Forces of the Republic of South Sudan who are in the Unified Training Centres.”

Speaking during the event, the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs applauded the UN agency and the RJMEC for organizing the training aimed at empowering senior officers to become peace ambassadors.

“Hon. Teny thanked UNITAR, RJMEC and the instructors for giving the Senior Officers a chance to become peace builders,” read the statement.

Angelina was appointed earlier this year to head the powerful ministry which has been dominated by men since independence and making her the first female minister of defence; however, Teny is facing real challenges as the security chapters of the revitalized peace agreement are not being implemented.

As she was attacking this workshop her forces, the SPLA in Opposition, were being attacked at their main training center in Morota of Central Equatoria.

The fighting in Morota has gone on for almost two months and the military leadership in Juba have failed to contain it so far.
