Nov 6, 2021 — Returning from a mission to Khartoum, Sudan, a South Sudanese high-level delegation under the leadership of Presidential Advisor on Security, Hon. Tut Gatluak Manime and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mayi Ayii Deng, claims to have made a huge breakthrough in mediating the rivaling parties in the Sudanese politics.
The delegation, which briefed president Kiir at J1 on Friday, November 5th, 2021 said they delivered president Kiir’s message to the leadership of Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on one hand and opposition parties on the other hand.
“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit was briefed this morning ( 5th November 2021) by a high-level delegation led by Presidential Advisor on National Security Hon Tut Gatluak Manime together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon Mayiik Ayii Deng and the Minister of Investment Hon Dr Dhieu Mathok Diing, on their recent official visit to Khartoum on October 31st 2021 to deliver a message from H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit, urging Sudanese leaders across the political divide to resolve their differences through dialogue.” President Kiir’s office reports.Â
According to president Kiir’s office, the delegation held intensive talks with the Sudanese leaders in an efforts to address the political tension in Sudan.
Upon his return, Hon. Tutkew Gatluak Manime and his delegation claims that the Sudanese parties reached a major breakthrough on the status of the political detainees.
“Hon Tut Gatluak Manime informed H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit that they had a fruitful meeting with the Sudanese Military Leadership headed by Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan in which they reached a major breakthrough on the status of the political detainees.” Part of president Kiir’s press office statement reads.
Hon Tut Gatluak Manime added that, the Sudanese Military Leadership headed By Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, agreed to release almost all the political Prisoners who were arrested following the dissolution of the Transitional Government.
According to the South Sudanese officials, “this important decision will pave the way for peaceful dialogue between the Civilian and Military leaders”.
On the other, news emerging from Khartoum indicate that the South Sudanese leaders left Khartoum empty handed, saying they didn’t make any tangible progress.
According to the Sudan News Agency, the South Sudanese delegation was hoping to get their former comrades such as Yasir Arman of SPLM/A-North and his colleagues released from prison; however, that did not happen.
The high-level delegation met with Arman but they did not commend on his detention and why he was not released like other political detainees.
Similarly, the African Union and UNITAMS mediators did not succeed in convincing the military coup leaders to re-install the transitional government, a call the Sudanese military junta refused.
On his part, the leader of the SPLM/A-North, Malik Agar calls on the mediators to never give on persuading the military leadership to soften their grasp on power to allow democracy to take its course in the country.
