September 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has borrowed around $600 millions from the Chinese government to pay outstanding civil servants’ salaries, officials said in Juba.
Earlier, information minister Michael Makuei Lueth told the Eye Radio in an exclusive interview that the government had taken a loan from a country he didn’t identified.
“The minister was in the parliament and he clearly stated that he will clear all the outstanding bills at anytime when the money is availed to him,” Makuei said.
“He is now in the process, there is a loan which we acquired and it is being processed now probably by next week or the other week these amounts would have been transferred here and everybody will be paid which will also be used for paying all the other outstanding arrears.”
For his part, a government official from the ministry of foreign affairs told the Nyamilepedia that the government was allowed by the Chinese government to loan almost $600 millions after an early rejection.
“The Chinese government accepted a request by the government of the republic of South Sudan to a loan of $589 million which will be used to pay the outstanding civil servant salaries of six months,” the official told the Nyamilepedia from the capital Juba.
