August 18, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan women leader at Romich Center has accused the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) of raping women in the run-up to the last fighting in the country’s Tonj of Warrap state.
Last week, fighting between members of the SSPDF who were on a disarmament campaign fought a fierce battle with armed civilians after indiscipline soldiers triggered a fight over a red scarf usually wore by the youth in the Warrap state area.
Akur Bol, a women leader in Tonj said the army raped around seven women and one girl. She said no one has been brought to justice by the army command in the area despite the fact that those responsible had been identified by the victims.
“Seven women have been raped. But the commanders who are responsible for the disarmament have not arrested the culprits although they have been identified by the women who were raped. This is very bad and we always set a bad precedent in everything we do,” she said.
Nyamilepedia could not immediately reach the army spokesman General Lul Ruai Koang for comment.
