December 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has appealed to the United States of America to lift sanctions on Defense Minister, Kuol Manyang Juuk, who was sanctioned by the world power this month.
The US this month sanctioned Juuk along with cabinet minister Martin Elia Lomoro over their role in prolonging the ongoing conflict saying the two men obstructed the path to peace in the world’s youngest nation.
“The defense minister is very crucial in the peace agreement,” South Sudan’s ambassador to the United States Philip Jada was quoted by the Washington Post as saying adding that “imposing sanctions at this time is not helpful in implementing the peace agreement.”
Despite the diplomatic row, Jada said, South Sudan, world’s youngest nation remains at the mercy of Washington.
“We have a very good engagement, and then they implement sanctions again, so we just start wondering why, if you’re in dialogue, do you continue to give punitive measures?”
Delays in implementing a 2018 revitalized peace deal aimed at putting an end to their country’s brutal conflict has strained relations between Juba and its benefactor.
