December 29, 2021—South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon and retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu has died on Christmas eve Sunday at the age of 90 year
Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and an instrumental icon in South Africa’s struggle against the white minority domination, was an Anglican bishop, a theologian, human rights activist and an author of some of the best selling books.
In his address to the nation on Sunday, the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa says the fall of the man of God, Tutu, is a big blow to South Africa and its future posterity.
” The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa”, President Ramaphosa said on Sunday.
President Ramaphosa further reiterated that Tutu was known as a symbol of unity, who never segregated his people on the ground of religion and issues to do with colour, adding that he was also a beacon of humanity.
“He distinguished himself as non-sectarian, inclusive, champion of universal human rights”, Ramaphosa added.
President Ramaphosa didn’t disclose the details surrounding the death of the veteran archbishop; however, sources within church revealed that late Tutu was diagnosed with cancer in 1990s and was also hospitalized in recent years on several occasions.
“Ultimately, at the age of 90, he died peacefully at the Oasis Frail Care Centre in Capetown this morning”, said by Dr. Ramphela Mamphele, Acting Chairperson of Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust and Co-ordinator of the office of the Archbishop on behalf of Tutu family.
In 1984, Desmond Tutu won a Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent resistance to apartheid regime in South Africa.
