August 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – As a gesture of solidarity with the people of South Sudan, the South African Government has donated humanitarian assistance worth R100 million, in an effort to help alleviate food insecurity faced in the country.

The humanitarian food consignment offered by the South African government was delivered in person by the country’s deputy minister of international relations and cooperation, Sandith Machijo Dlamini, during a visit to South Sudan on Thursday.

“We are here not only to pledge solidarity but to tangibly demonstrate our support through humanitarian assistance. This assistance package is valued at over R100 000 000,” Dlamini said.

She emphasized that the humanitarian support will play a positive role in helping the country’s vulnerable population recover from years of suffering during this post-conflict period.

“South Africa hopes that the assistance will contribute to the alleviation of social-economic challenges facing vulnerable communities, including refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, comprising mainly of women and children,” she said.

The aid consignment includes, 130,000 units of Sorghum, beans, cooking oil, and salt packets.

She stressed that peace and development are closely related, and that no one can embark on development before achieving peace.

“We are confident that as South Sudanese you will find lasting solutions to the challenges before you. Peace and development are two sides of the same coin. Without peace you can’t have development,” she said.

South Sudan warring parties signed an agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end years of extreme levels of food insecurity that has become one of the biggest refugee crises in Africa.
