December 7, 2021 — Authorities in Unity State announced that at least six have been killed in an inter-communal clash between armed youth in Leer and youth of neighboring Mayiendit.
In a statement, the Unity State authorities say, the clashes between the armed youth of the two counties left at least six dead.
“At least six people have been reported killed in a clash between armed youth from Mayiendit and Leer counties in Unity State”, the statement of Unity State reads.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this morning, one of the local officials, who requested not to be named for fear of reprisal, said the incident was sparked by wrangling over tax collection along the borders of the two counties.
“The incident was triggered by a misunderstanding over tax collection along the borders of the two counties”, the local official who declined to be identified told Nyamilepedia from Leer County.
According to the related reports, a group of youth from Leer who are not taxation officials demanded taxes from a group of cattle traders from Mayiendit, sparking a gun confrontation.
The Unity State Minister for Information and Communication, Gabriel Hon Makuei says the casualties are from both sides.
