Juba, South Sudan
September 9,2021— The Deputy Speaker of the Council of States and senior member of the SPLM/A-IO, Hon. Nathaniel Pierino rubbishes claims that the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R_TGoNU) will expire on September 12, 2021 as stipulated in the original document.
The senior official claimed that the legal term of the unity government shall expire in the next two years instead of September 12, 2021 as speculated by the critics of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R_TGoNU)
“The R-ARCSS was signed on 12/9/2018. Upon signing, the counting of 8 months Pre-Transitional Period commenced, then was extended by 6 months and then by 100 days (3 months).”,Nathaniel clarified in a statement.
“At the expiration of 100 days, the Parties decided to form RTGoNU on the 22/2/2020, terminating the Pre-Transitional Period and commencing the Transitional Period of 3 years”, he added.
According to Hon. Oyet, the 22/2/2021 marked the first year of the Transitional Period and next year shall mark the second year of the Transitional Period.
He believes that the wrong statistic on when the mandate of the transitional period ends is caused by misinformation and therefore people should be re-educated on the peace agreement.
“This is for the benefit of those who don’t know the peace process”, Nathaniel said.
Nathaniel was appointed as Deputy Speaker of the Council of States, the upper house of the National Parliament on the ticket of SPLM-IO under the country’s first vice president Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhuron.
The Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan ( R-ARCSS) was signed on 12th of September 2018 with hope that it would build a roadmap for South Sudan within 3 years; however, very little has been achieved so far.
