February 24th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s new transitional government of national unity has been urged to expedite the establishment of hybrid court provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.

President Salva Kiir and opposition leader – now first vice president – Dr. Riek Machar Teny, agreed to compromise on a number of issues and form what is officially the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU), a move seen by many as a concrete step toward the end of the six-year civil war.

In a statement, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) welcomed the formation of the unity government urging urged the new government to expedite efforts to establish the hybrid court.

The rights group also called for the release of those arbitrary detained by the parties to the government.

“South Sudan’s Unity Government should quickly set out a human rights agenda that includes reforming the abusive national security service, freeing abducted civilians held by armed groups, and establishing a hybrid war crimes court in partnership with the African Union,” Jehanne Henry, the HRW Africa director for Human Rights said.
