February 18th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) has arrested the Mayor of Renk town for inciting protests in defiance to an order by President Salva Kiir to return the country to ten states, sources have said.
Kiir over the weekend agreed to an opposition demand for return to the country’s previous ten states because – they said – the now defunct 32 states had negative complications emanating from land grabbing.
Northern Upper Nile state – whose capital is Renk – is one of the states affected by Kiir’s order and residents have been on streets to express rejection of President Kiir’s order.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, a local government official said NSS security members arrested Atet Monjdeng for expressing disappointment on the return to 10 states.
“Yes that is true. The national security has arrested him while going to Sudan. Yesterday (Monday) he expressed rejection of the return to 10 states,” the local government official said on condition of anonymity.
“We don’t know why he took that matter to his own thing when all the states have been affected. We want peace not war,” he added.
