June 18, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, will not seek the permission of anybody in order to build a dam along the Nile River, a presidential aide said this afternoon.

Ateny Wek Ateny, President Salva Kiir’s spokesman also denied – in a brief statement on his Facebook page – remarks attributed to him that he said South Sudan was not ready for the use of Nile water for development.

In a statement, Ateny said he was wrongly quoted and reiterated South Sudan’s right for development saying the world’s youngest country will not seek permission from any country to build a dam.

He however said that such thing would happen in line with regional laws governing the development along the river Nile.

“South Sudanese for the moment are only looking for sustainable peace, and then seek developmental projects later. We have the Nile flowing in our country and we need no permission from any, except in accordance with the Nile Basin Protocol,” Ateny said.

In recent weeks, there have been reports that South Sudan was allocating land in the east of the country for Egypt to deploy troops to possibly counter Ethiopia in case of any escalation.
