October 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan parties to the revitalized peace agreement, regional and international envoys are meeting in Djibouti over the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

South Sudan is only two weeks away from a deadline in which the parties to the September 2018 agreement are required to form a transitional government of national unity provided for in the agreement.

The meeting is meant to assess progress made in the implementation of the agreement. All the parties are presenting their reports to the regional and international envoys.

These include the progress on the cantonment of forces, establishment of the unified national army, the number and boundaries of the states.

A meeting between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar on Sunday collapsed without a deal over the sticking issues and Machar has said he will not be a member in the government Kiir said will form on November 12.

Machar argued that the absence of a unified army, police and national security as well as settlement on the number and boundaries of the states would threaten the unity government.

He said these outstanding issues must be settled first to ensure a stable transition. His position was also echoed by the NDM led by Dr. Lam Akol who said they would be a part of the new government if these issues are not addressed.

The regional body, IGAD, which mediated the 2018 agreement said: “The mechanisms of the peace agreement will be reporting on the status of the implementation.”
