March 17th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — A UN rights agency has urged South Sudan government officials to disclose their wealths before taking their position in the revitalized unity government.

This comes this comes in a report by the rights entity last week before South Sudan’s president Salva Kiit Mayardit sworn into office members of the new cabinet as provided for in the revitalized unity government.

In the statement, the UN Human Rights Commission for South Sudan recommended that all senior officials make written declarations regarding their assets prior to taking up government posts.

This is in line with the revitalized unity government which provides for a transparent and accountable government. Chapter 4 of the unity government says government and opposition officials found to have been corrupt during the civil war shall be barred from taking roles in the unity government.

“The misappropriation and diversion of public funds are made easier by the predominantly cash economy of South Sudan, and are facilitated by nepotism in appointments to senior government positions,” the UN rights body said in a report released last week.

“An overall lack of transparency and civilian oversight in accounting exacerbates the problem.”

It further urged the government to work with other states to recover and repatriate proceeds from corrupt activities, including properties purchased in neighboring and other countries.
