February 23rd 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan president, Salva Kiir, and newly appointed First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar have delayed the formation of the new cabinet after deadlock emerges over allocation of ministerial portfolios, sources have said.

Kiir, and Machar who was sworn in as First Vice President on Saturday as a consequence of a 2018 peace deal were to form a new government on Saturday but disagreements over how to select ministers for each party led the parties to adjourn the action.

“There is disagreement over how ministers are allocated and who takes what,” a source at J1 told Nyamilepedia.

“But there is high spirit between the parties to form the unity government this week because I think they are going to reach a consensus,” the source added.

There is also a disagreement over the nomination of the vice-president for South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA).

Four leaders were competing for the position until Saturday but a source in the alliance told Nyamilepedia that the race has been limited to Dr. Lam Akol, the alliance’s secretary-general, and Hussein Abdel Baggi.

It was not clear how the disagreement will be brought to end as it enters the second day since Kiir appointed and swore in the other four vice-presidents provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.
