Rights group condemns killing of UN peacekeeper

June 28th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – An umbrella of South Sudan right organizations, the Lakes State Civil Society Organizations have condemned the killing, this week, of a UN peacekeeper in the Central Equatoria region.

The UN Mission in South Sudan said a Bangladeshi peacekeeper was killed on Tuesday in an armed attack on its convoy that was supporting the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Yei River state.

“The civil Society Organizations in Lakes State has strongly condemned the killing of Nepalese UN Mission peacekeeper in the country. Killing of the humanitarians workers will not be a proper solution to South Sudan crisis,” said a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.

The statement dated 27 June said aide organizations and UN peacekeepers working in the country should be allowed to move freely in the young African country marred in a bloody civil war since December 2018.

“UN peacekeepers and other aid workers working in the country should be allowed to carry out their work freely and safely and should not be subjected to senseless attacks.

We the Civil Society in Lakes region call upon the two parties whether government or opposition to reconsider the support that has been granted by the humanitarian workers to help the people of South Sudan,” the statement further said.

The right group express our sincere sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of our peacekeeper, Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui, who was killed on Tuesday.

“It’s our humble request to the family of the decease and the entire people of Bangladesh that we have lost a great man, it’s a great lost to you and to the needy people of South Sudan being supported through humanitarians assistance,” partly read the statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.

The group said it is a tragedy that he lost his life in such an appalling act of violence while working to help those in need and to protect the lives of others, We therefore appeals to both conflicting parties to apprehend assassinate to book.

“In conclusion, we still urge the humanitarian’s workers not to get discourage but continue to supports people of South Sudan at different levels. We encourage two leaders, President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar to bring lasting peace into the country such that all parties can respect the freedom of movement of humanitarians’ aids workers,” it further said.
