May 7th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has called for regular meeting between South Sudan’s two main rivals, President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNMISS, David Shearer, said the meeting between the two main foes would build trust and confidence and would assure the people of South Sudan that there is peace in the country.

“There is need to have regular meetings between President Kiir and Riek Machar to review the progress. That’ll build trust and confidence and extend a signal to South Sudanese that the agreement is on track,” Shearer said.

The senior UN official who welcomed the recent extension of the pre-transitional period further said the extension of the period is regrettable but said is a sign that the leaders of South Sudan have the will to end the suffering of their people.

“The delay is regrettable but a unanimous agreement for an extension is a positive development, and is a sign of goodwill between the parties to end the suffering of their people,” Shearer said.

“…a number of fundamental issues remain unresolved, including the formation of a unified security force and the issue of boundaries and states,” he added.
