June 13th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional community in East Africa has been urged to release SPLM-IO chairman and South Sudan’s First Vice-President designate Dr. Riek Machar Teny from house arrest.
Machar, since June last year, has been under a forced house detention in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Before moving to Khartoum, he was released from a two-year South African house arrest almost a month early.
In a communique issued from Khartoum following a four-day consultative conference, the maim armed opposition group urged the Intergovernmental Authority on Development to release Machar.
The IGAD is the regional body that mediated the revitalized peace agreement between South Sudan government and various armed groups who have been fighting to overthrow President Kiir since December 2013.
“[The SPLM-IO] urges IGAD to release the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/A (IO), Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon,” the communique issued in Khartoum partly read.
