November 28th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional and international community has been urged to forge a unified position in support of the “full and timely” implementation of the revitalized peace agreement in South Sudan.

The government and a number of opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal more than one year ago to end the six-year old civil war which has killed and displaced many of the country’s 12-million population.

The agreement which provided for the formation of a “Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU)” has witnessed setbacks as the region and the world has said lack of political will from the parties was hampering the implementation of the peace accord.

A report by the United Nations released this week accused Uganda and Kenya of hampering peace efforts in the world’s youngest nation with Uganda sending back troops to South Sudan where they fought alongside the government from the outbreak of war.

Speaking during the 11th R- JMEC meeting in Juba on Wednesday, interim chairman of the peace monitoring body, Lt. Gen. Augostino Njoroge, appealed to the region and the world to forge a unified position in support of the peace agreement.

“With the 100 days ticking, I urge[s] the region and the international community to present a unified voice to in support of the full and timely implementation of the peace agreement as we move forward,” Njoroge said.

Instead of forming a unity government in May as required by the agreement, President Salva Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny – both of whom are principal signatories to the agreement – decided to extend the pre-transitional period until February next year.

This was because critical tasks provided for in the agreement were not implemented.

The parties are required by the agreement to unify the army, police and national security. They are also required by the parties to resolve the dispute over the number and boundaries of states.
