June 10th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition movement, the SPLM/A-IO under the leadership of the country’s First Vice-President Riek Machar said they have repulsed a government offensive outside their base in Kenyira in Mugdo Payam in the country’s Yei River state on Friday.
In a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia on Saturday, the group said the government attack was repulsed and the attackers run back in disarray capturing 3 AK-47 from them.
“In the early morning of Friday, 8th June 2018, the regime’s tribal and genocidal forces came out of their trench at Jombu and attempted to attack and infiltrate the SPLA (IO) base at Kenyira in Mugwo Payam of Yei River County, but were repulsed at Lopu’de stream. The attackers ran back in disarray with suspected casualties and our gallant soldiers captured three AK47 from the coward attackers,” the statement said.
The statement which bear the name and signature of the opposition governor’s spokesman, Wayi Gowill Edwards, alleges that the attacking government forces kidnapped a boy and an old woman.
“We are outraged by this attack which led to the abduction of a boy and an old man by the aggressors, and we are demanding for their unconditional release,” the statement added.
The group said another clash erupted at Payawa, 9 miles away on Yei-Kaya road, when a government convoy traveling from Kaya to Yei town provocatively shelled the rebel base the same day the rebel said they repulsed a government attack.
The rebel said the attack by the government is a violation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed in December 2017 and called on the CTSAMM to investigates these offensives so that the culprits could be held to account.
“These attacks are in breach of the CoHA and have affected the free movement of the civilian population along this road. It therefore, calls for an investigation from the CTSAMM so to establish the facts and hold the culprits to account,” the statement further added.
