April 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The military chief of general staff for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) has called on his troops to fully respect the permanent ceasefire agreement signed in June 2018.

Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual who also urged holdout opposition groups to join the peace process also said the revitalized peace agreement signed in September last year must as well be protected calling it the only hope for the people of South Sudan.

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir, and opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar, signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in September last year. Early in June, the two signed a permanent ceasefire agreement to end the hostilities and grant for humanitarian access.

Gen. Gatwech who is on tour in Jonglei state made the remarks during a peace rally conducted in the opposition held Phow State’s Phow town.

“We have to protect this peace agreement and to do this, we must respect the ceasefire agreement signed by our Chairman and Commander in Chief Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon with President Salva Kiir Mayardiit,” Gen. Gatwech said during the rally.

He called on other opposition groups who are not part of the peace agreement to join the peace process that is ongoing saying “it is the only way the people of South Sudan will enjoy peace and tranquility.”
