December 26th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan rebel group has called for the renegotiation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon.
President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and prominent opposition and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny in September signed – under regional and international pressure – signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the ongoing civil war.
The agreement in Addis Ababa followed months of intense negotiations among delegates of the government and opposition who must, by the time, sign a pact or face international or further regional isolation.
In an exclusive interview with the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, the leader of the holdout opposition People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), Dr. Hakim Dario, said the revitalized peace deal will not succeed claiming it excludes the people of South Sudan.
“R-ARCSS in its current form is not viable and will not succeed as it excludes the participation of the people in the decision making process. R-ARCSS is by-passing the people and prefers to give legitimacy to Kiir and SPLM elites at the expense of the people,” he told the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.
He said the peace deal needs to be reopened for renegotiation which he said is the only to put the people of South Sudan first saying his movement stand for the people in all its programs.
“R-ARCSS needs to be re-opened to put the people first, and power sharing be made between the people of the three regions not between the elites. PDM stands for the people, the People come first and above everything else,” he added.
The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) was a part of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) but filled out of the alliance and peace talks in late August following a signing of preliminary peace agreement ahead of the final signing in September in Addis Ababa.
