June 4th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudanese rebel commander allied to the country’s former First Vice President Riek Machar died on Sunday in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum after a lengthy battle against unidentified illness, the Information Ministry for the rebel Federal State of Fashoda announced hours after the death of the General.
Maj. Gen. Stephen Awshau, nicknamed ‘Wadeng’, died on Sunday reportedly after battling the unidentified sickness for a long period of time prior to his emergency transfer to the Sudanese capital for further treatment.
“With all the sorrow, government of the Federal Fashoda State announces with sorrow the death of Maj. Gen. Stephen Awshau today Sunday, 03/06/2018 at 5 am in the Sudanese capital Khartoum,” the opposition government of the Federal Fashoda state announced on Sunday in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.
The death of the high-ranking SPLA-IO general came a day after the death of another SPLA-IO general who was killed by the government troops in clashes near the South Sudanese capital Juba on Saturday.
Machar’s rebels announced on Sunday that Brigadier General Angelo Logora who has been deployed south of the capital Juba was killed alongside two others, whom the opposition said were also injured after a surprise government attack that they claim to have been repulsed.
“Yesterday, 02/06/2018, the regime’s forces launched an aggressive attack against the SPLA-IO base in Wunulyet killing one of our commanders and injuring two others,” a statement signed by the deputy SPLA-IO spokesman said on Sunday.
The SPLM-IO in a separate statement on Sunday accused the south Sudan’s crumpling government of violating the ceasefire agreement signed in December 2017 between the government of President Salva Kiir and a number of armed groups fighting the Juba based administration.
