August 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism (R-JMEC), General Augostino Njoroge has said that time is running out for the implementation of the peace agreement.

South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in September last year in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the ongoing civil war.

The agreement provided for the formation of a unified national army and cantonment of all forces before a unity government initially set for May is formed in November.

Speaking during the opening session of a monthly meeting in Juba on Thursday, General Njoroge said all sites have been verified and that forces has been ordered by the Joint Defense Board (JDB) to report to the cantonment sites.

“CTSAMVM has reported that the majority of the designated sites and barracks have been verified. The JDB issued orders for all forces to move to the designated cantonment sites and barracks by 31 July 2019,” he said.

Njoroge further sympathized the importance of cantoning forces to the formation of the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).

“One of the key factors influencing the rate of implementation of the critical pending pre-transitional tasks is funding,” he added urging the government which promised to pay $100 million for peace to “continue its disbursement in a predictable and timely manner.”

“Time is fast running out and a lot still remains to be done.”
