Wednesday, March 19, 2025 – South Sudan is on the brink of another devastating civil war. The Revitalised Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), which was signed in 2018 and has been extended twice so far, is now at the verge of collapse and the South Sudan Government under President Salva Kiir has dispatched its warfare machineries and foreign mercenaries to the frontlines in preparation for a full-scale civil war.

This comes after a horrific incident in Nasir on March 3, 2025, where over 1,000 Nuer people were killed, villages destroyed, and many others displaced. The Concern Nuer Women (CNW) have strongly condemned the killings, blaming the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) for perpetuating instability in Nasir town since 2015 and calls upon the international community to intervene to prevent another genocide.

The country’s history of conflict, which began in 2013, has been marked by ethnic divisions, power struggles, and human rights abuses. Despite multiple peace agreements, including the R-ARCSS, violence has persisted, and the humanitarian crisis has worsened. The conflict has resulted in over 2.2 million internally displaced persons, 2.5 million refugees, and widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and sexual violence.

The international community has called for increased diplomatic pressure on South Sudan’s leaders to implement the R-ARCSS and address the root causes of the conflict. The United Nations Security Council has imposed an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on individuals who undermine the peace process.

To prevent further violence and ensure lasting peace, it is essential to address the underlying issues driving the conflict, including ethnic divisions, power struggles, and competition for resources. The international community must continue to support efforts towards reconciliation, transitional justice, and sustainable development in South Sudan.

During the liberation struggle, the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, followed by the independence of the country, the Nuer people have endured immense suffering while their land continued to be plagued by war.

In 1985, Nuer civilians were massacred in the Greater Gajaak region of Eastern Jikany and in 1991, the SPLM/A also executed thousands of Nuer civilians living in areas under their control. The same scenario took place in 2005, 2013, and 2016 when more than 50.000 Nuer civilians were slaughtered in the capital of South Sudan, Juba, in cold blood. Now, the Nuer people continue to face violence and death in cities like Nasir, Juba, and some parts of the country at the hands of the SSPDF forces under the command of President Salva Kiir Mardit, the self-imposed president of the Republic of South Sudan.

The CNW is calling on the International Community and the R-ARCSS partners to intervene and prevent further escalation of those atrocities.

We are also calling on the South Sudanese government to stop the atrocities and the killing of the Nuer civilians in Nasir and to take an immediate action to address the ongoing conflict between the SSPDF and the Nuer civilians.

Finally, we are calling on all the South Sudanese people and the peace lovers, to come together and condemn the killing of innocent civilians in South Sudan.
