Sep 15, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has pledged to raise the county budget by 50 billion in the next financial year, 2020/2021.
He said this in a leaders’ meeting he had convened to discuss the County revenue sharing stalemate at the Senate this morning at the statehouse, Nairobi.
The raise will, however, depend on how well the economyperforms.
According to President Kenyatta, the money will be sent to the counties as part of the efforts to strengthen devolution.
The president urged the Kenyan leaders to urgently resolve the revenue sharing stalemate at the Senate to avoid disruption of service delivery in the Counties.
In attendance were Former Prime Minister, Hon. Raila Odinga and the Chairman of the Council of Governors, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya.
The Senate was represented at the meeting by Hon Samuel Poghisio (Majority Leader), Hon Irungu Kang’ata (Majority Chief Whip), James Orengo (Minority Leader) and Hon Fatuma Dullo (Deputy Majority Leader).
This has been interpreted as a way to woe the senators to pass the proposed revenue bill.
The bill has been in senate for more than three months now with over ten sittings.
It has divided the senate with the senators from the counties that stand to lose going against the motio while those that stand to gain are strongly supporting the motion.
Over 11 amendments to the bill were tabled on the senate floor.
All those amendments were rejected by the members of the senate even after working on overtime to find the solution.
In the last sitting that happened today the Senate was still divided.
The Speaker, Kenneth Lusaka, adjourned the senate and called for informal sitting (Kamukuji) to find a solution.
The motion will be revisited next week when the Kamukuji will present a report on its findings.
