May 06, 2021 — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has welcomed the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and the Head of UNMISS, Mr. Nicholas Haysom on Wednesday, 5 May 2021.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the new Special Representative acknowledged the progressed made in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan and assured President Kiir of UN support.
According to Mr. Haysom, the United Nations will continue to promote the implementation of the peace Agreement.
Mr. Haysom also commended President Kiir’s efforts to support peace in the region and mostly in the neighboring Sudan.
The new head of mission, who is a South African, is replacing the outgoing Special Representative, David Shearer, a New Zealand politician who resigned from the New Zealand parliament in December 2016 where he served as a leader of the opposition Labor Party from 2011 to 2013.
Shearer resumed office as the head of UNMISS in January 2017 and served one of the longest terms as the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan.
