Dec 10, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has promised to support the Basketball Federation as a way to help promote the popularization of the sport in the country.
The president made this promise today during the meeting with Luol Deng, the President of South Sudan Basketball Federation.
According to a statement shared by the office of the president, Luol briefed president Kiir on the performance of South Sudan National Basketball team during the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 pre- qualifiers in Rwanda.
“The team of South Sudan Basketball Federation headed by Luol Deng briefed H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit about the performance of South Sudan National Basketball team throughout the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 pre- qualifiers in Rwanda’’ reads the statement from J1.
The president commended the Basketball Federation for the great work they have done and expressed the importance to the development of basketball and other sports activities in the Country
The president pledged to continue supporting the team to promote the popularization and development of basketball in the country.
“Hailing that basketball is a sport that is deeply loved by the people of South Sudan, H.E. President Salva Kiir said, noting that he is willing to continue to support Basketball Federation to promote the popularization and development of basketball in South Sudan,” the statement said.
On his part, Luol Deng pledged to do more to promote and maintain the high standard of the game of the South Sudan National Basketball team.
He appreciated the president for his support towards the team.
“ Luol Deng said, President Salva Kiir has been very supportive to the basketball national team, and appreciated everyone that has constantly supported the national team,” it said.
South Sudan National Basketball Team Competed in the Afrobasket 2021 Pre qualifiers in Rwanda in which it played 3 Games against Nigeria, Mali & Rwanda.
The team won two of the three games and came second in the group behind Nigeria.
It has now jumped in the world rankings by 9 places and now are in the top 100 teams in the world.
The second round will be held in February before the Actual Afrobasket in August.
