April 14, 2022 — South Sudan’s President Kiir constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate Leer incident and named Hon. Manawa Peter Gatkuoth, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, to lead the investigation committee for the ongoing violence in southern part of Unity State especially on recent atrocities committed in Leer County against innocent civilians.
This comes less than 48-hours after group of youth activists and some lawmakers demonstrated in Freedom Hall in Juba on Monday against barbaric killings of civil population in Leer County.
The peaceful protesters were holding signposts written ” Relief the Unity State Governor and three County Commissioners of southern part of Unity”.
In a republican decree read out on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Wednesday, President Salva Kiir Mayardit named Hon. Gatkuoth as the Chairperson of the investigation team on the atrocities committed against civil population in Leer early this week.
The investigation team is given a 14-day mandate to report its final findings to president Salva Kiir.
The committee also comprised of national Ministers and members of Parliament as well as senior lawyers.
