November 29, 2021—South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit is calling on peace mediators of Sant’Egidio to arrange resumption of peace negotiations between government and holdout opposition groups.
Speaking at the 5th Governor Forum’s in Juba today, President Kiir called on the Community of Sant’Egidio, to prepare for the resumption of peace talks between the government and the opposition hold-out groups.
Kiir said Rome peace talks were muted in the wake of several and constant violation of the ceasefire by the opposition forces loyal to South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA).
” Rome talks were suspended due to continued violation of the ceasefire by the opposition groups of the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance – or SSOMA”,President Kiir said at 5th Governor’s Forum during his closing remarks early today in Juba.
Kiir said he is willing to give another chance for negotiations despite what he refers to as the continued violations by the opposition groups.
South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA) is an umbrella group of different opposition parties that declined to sign the 2018 peace deal citing intransigency of the signatories to the agreement to address the root cause of the conflict in the country.
The Coalition includes SSUF/A of the Former SSPDF former Chief of General Staff, Gen. Paul Malong Awan, Real SPLM of the former SPLM Secretary Pa’gan Amum Okiech and other small opposition parties.
