February 6th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Displaced persons living inside United Nations sites in South Sudan are expressing the desire to return home following the signing of the revitalized peace agreement last year, David Shearer, UNMISS head in South Sudan have said.
Speaking to a news conference at the United Nations in New York, Shearer also said there are also around 130 thousands South Sudanese returning home from neighboring countries where they have been seeking safety.
“We are seeing a number of people in protection of civilians sites and across the country as well expressing desire to go back to their homes,” shearer said.
“In approximate terms, about 130 thousands people come back from neighboring countries and as I say within the protection of civilians site, people are starting to move out or requesting assistant to be able to move back to their homes,” he added.
South Sudan government and opposition groups signed in September last year a peace deal to end the ongoing five-year old brutal conflict.
The UN envoy also said political fighting have dramatically diminished in the country raising hope for the return of the IDPs to their homes.
