July 26th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s peace monitoring body, said on Wednesday in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia that it condemn Tuesday’s attack against aid organizations in South Sudan’s Maban county.
On Monday, a group of local youth organized a violent protest demanding employment opportunities for the local community. The protesters forcefully entered compounds belonging to more than ten aid organizations and looted their offices and residence.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the JMEC said it has been outraged and as such strongly condemns the attack against aid workers which might also affect the service that they renders to the local community.
“The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) expresses its outrage and strongly condemns the attack on humanitarian workers and the destruction of facilities and equipment at the Maban camp, in Northern Upper Nile,” the statement date July 25th said.
It added that the attack against aid groups is regrettable as it also violates the agreement on ceasefire agreement and the protection of civilian and humanitarian access that was signed in Addis Ababa in December 2017.
“Attacks on aid workers who diligently offer their services to alleviate the suffering of people of South Sudan, are deeply regrettable and indeed a violation of the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access signed in December 2017,” it added.
The statement further, while acknowledging that it is not the first attack of its kind, calls upon relevant authorities in the area to carry out independent investigation and hold perpetrators accountable.
“Unfortunately, this is one of the many other attacks that targeted aid workers in the country in the recent past, including killings of personnel. JMEC calls on the authorities to carry out an independent investigation into the attack and to hold those responsible to account,” the statement further said.
