October 14th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s peace agreement signed in September in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by South Sudanese parties is being failed by the guarantors of peace according to a senior SPLM-IO official.
South Sudan government and opposition groups including the SPLM-IO led by former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon signed the long-awaited revitalized agreement last month in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the five-year old civil strife in the country.
However, important measures deemed necessary in the steps towards the implementation of the agreement has not been taken by the parties including the release of the political detainees and the lifting of the state of emergency which has been in force since December 201 at the onset of the conflict.
In an exclusive interview with the Nyamilepedia on Saturday, the SPLM-IO Deputy Chairperson of National Committee for Information and Public Relations Manawa Peter Gatkuoth said the agreement is failing at the highest responsibility of the guarantors of peace.
“The agreement is failing and it is being failed by the guarantors who said it should be signed. It is not good for Sudan to tell parties to sign the agreement and they don’t take responsibility,” Manawa said.
Manawa said the guarantors of peace and the whole of the region especially Sudan and Uganda are silent while fighting ha s been there since the day the agreement was signed saying they are not concerned despite new displacement in South Sudan.
“The guarantors of the agreement are just silent. The whole of the region is silent especially Sudan and Uganda are silent. People are fighting every day and there is new displaced every day in South Sudan and nobody is concerned,” Manawa further said.
Gatkuoth further said the Sudanese government as the primary guarantor of the agreement should play a role in the implementation of the agreement to compel parties who are not living to their signature to commit to the agreement.
“Sudan should play at least a role because it is Sudan which told the parties to sign the agreement,” he added.
