Ateny Wek Ateny claimed that the parties to the revitalized peace agreement have agreed to extend the Transitional Period up to 2023 to allow full implementation of critical tasks.

He had alleged that the extension was due to the implementation matrix of the peace deal as many provisions have not yet been implemented.

Representatives to three parties to the revitalized peace agreement have distanced themselves from the statement made by the press secretary in the Office of the President on the plan to extend the transitional period

The government spokesperson, Michael Makuei disputed the information saying that the peace parties did not agree on the said extension.

When reached out, the chairperson of the National Democratic Movement, Dr. Lam akol, who is also a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement also said that he was not aware of the extension of the transitional period adding that the elections should be held in December 2022, as enshrined in the new peace deal.

Reaffirming other parties to the revitalized peace agreements statements, the director for information and public relations at the SPLM-IO, Puok Bok Bulang, said that the main opposition group was also not aware.

The peace accord obligates the unity government to hold elections sixty days before the end of the Transitional Period to establish a democratically elected government.
