November 22nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan parliament speaker Anthony Lino Makana has reportedly rejected calls to resign saying he would do so unless President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who doubles as the SPLM chairman, asked him to step aside.
Early this week, all the 196 SPLM caucus in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly asked Makana to resign to avoid impeachment after MPs discovered corruption practices.
Members of parliament who spoke to Nyamilepedia said a meeting conducted on Monday ended up with Makana refusing to resign because it was supposed to be SPLM chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit who should ask him to resign.
“We met with him on Monday but he refused to resign as we asked,” one lawmaker who requested not to be named told the Nyamilepedia from Juba this afternoon. “He said he will not step down unless the president of the republic ask him to do so.”
Another lawmaker said “the resolutions of the meeting have been forwarded to the party chair for further guidance and deliberation.”
