June 2nd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s parliament, whose term ended in July 2015, has held meetings in the nation’s capital Juba to discuss the extension of its own term and that of the President, Salva Kiir, which ended in July 2015 too according to a statement by the country’s justice minister.
A draft proposal to amend the constitutional bill for extension of the parliament was presented yesterday by the Justice Minister Paulino to the country’s law makers for deliberation.
“This is a first presentation and the speaker and the house has referred the whole matter to the committee of legislation and after the completion, it will be presented to the house anytime from now,” Pual Bunju, the chairperson of the National Assembly’s Information Committee, told journalists this morning.
In March 2015, South Sudan parliament unilaterally extended president Kiir’s tenure in office, in a controversial move that was condemned by the main opposition group under the leadership of Chairman and Commander-in-Chief Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhorgon of the SPLM-IO.
The warring factions signed an agreement in August 2015 but the deal collapsed soon after the two feuding factions engaged in fierce fighting in July 2016, that forced Former First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar out of Juba to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
