June 02, 2021 – Ghanaian soldiers left netizens in shock after video footage of them chasing and randomly beating up civilians over a missing cell phone emerged.
According to the BBC Africa, the members of the organized forces went on the rampage Thursday, assaulting civilians after a mobile phone allegedly went missing in the north-western town of Wa.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media sparking outrage as the people’s protectors turned into perpetrators.
In the footage, the soldiers are seen beating up residents on the streets of the town without any provocation with some making missteps are sliding through a waterway.
Sources say some of the victims were forced to lie in an open gutter and slapped repeatedly into submission.
Eyewitnesses said that the soldiers claimed they were searching for a stolen mobile phone.
Unprofessional conduct
In a statement to the media, the military High Command distanced itself from what it described as the unprofessional conduct of the soldiers and indicated that internal disciplinary measures had been initiated.
The incident comes days after security personnel clashed with civilians in Ejura, southern Ghana, resulting in the deaths of two people.
The incident is typical of how African governments find excuses to heavy-handedly treat citizens in times of dissent.
