January 16th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government and opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by the country’s former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny are planning to hold peace celebration  in the government held town of Nasir, a top opposition official told the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.

Under regional and international pressure,  South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader, Dr.  Riek Machar Teny, signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal in September last year in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the the ongoing five-year old civil war.

The agreement in Addis Ababa followed months of intense negotiations among delegates of the government and opposition who only had August 5th 2018 to reach a preliminary deal or further regional isolation.

The government in late October conducted a huge peace celebration ceremony in the capital Juba and was attended by regional leaders as well as many opposition leaders including Machar.

Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, the SPLM-IO Sobat state deputy governor, Duol Tut Gor said they conducted trust-building meetings last year and are planning to hold peace celebrations with the government in Nasir town soon.

“A trust-building meeting was held last year and possible joint peace celebration in [the] near future,” he told the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday adding that “but the date and time [is] not yet agreed.”
