November 24th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan opposition figure has hinted at the use of force to bring the badly needed peace in the world’s youngest nation if government and other signatories to the revitalized peace agreement failed to form a unity government in February.
President Salva Kiir and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement last year to end the ongoing civil war which began following dispute within the ruling SPLM party in December 2013.
The agreement required the parties to form a unity government last May but because pre-transitional tasks critical for the unity government formation were not in place, the parties had to extend the pre-transitional period for November.
Because the same tasks were not in place by November 12th, the parties decided to extend the pre-transitional period for another three months.
There is no indication that the parties were working toward resolution of the outstanding issues as the newly extended pre-transitional period enters its first month.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Saturday, Emmanuel Ajawin, a senior member of the South Sudan Opposition Movements, said they are concerned by the agreement because they are not signatories to it saying they already have colleagues fighting the government to achieve peace.
“Well we are not part of the agreement and extension doesn’t concern us,” he said.  “It is for the parties that signed it. Some of our colleagues in the alliance are already fighting the regime.”
