August 24th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The ongoing South Sudan conflict is threatening to create a lost generation in the world’s youngest country according to international experts.
South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after a national convention for the ruling fractured SPLM party turned violent on sparking armed fighting among Presidential Guards leading to a civil war.
Alicia Luedke, South Sudan Researcher, at Amnesty International has warned that the country is on the verge of developing another lost generation.
In a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia on Friday, the regional expert estimated that more than 70% of children that are supposed to have access to quality education are out of schools as a direct result of the ongoing South Sudan civil war that has uprooted more than half of the country’s 12 million population.
“The situation as a whole is producing another lost generation. Schools have been razed in successive waves of fighting, or occupied by armed groups and more than 70% of school age children – the highest proportion in the world – are not able to access education,” the expert said.
She pointed out that the country has not developed the educational sectors pointing out that there are no or few secondary schools in the country since 2005
“This is especially true for youth and adolescents. As a result of years of underdevelopment and conflict, there are few secondary schools in South Sudan,” she said.
