August 16th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The SPLM-IO Chairman of National Committee for Information and Public Relations, Mabior Garang de’Mabior, said on Wednesday that the ongoing civil war will continue in case the signed agreement is not well implemented.

South Sudan’s government and the SPLM-IO along with other armed and non-armed opposition groups signed a peace agreement in the Sudanese capital Khartoum early this month in an effort spearheaded by the IGAD to end the South Sudan conflict.

In a social media Facebook post, Mabior said on Wednesday that the peace agreement will not change the attitude of the South Sudanese elites in juba which he said is fueling the ongoing conflict.

“The signing of any agreement even if we got all we wanted, will not change the bigoted attitudes of our elites, which is fueling the conflict. It is also an illusion to think that someone else will solve our problems, while we remain spectators in our own affairs. It is an illusion to expect that: “something will happen”, as if invoking John Garang sayings will solve the problem, as I see some entitled politicians doing,” Mabior wrote.

Mabior’s message stated that it would be a real perception that his group, the SPLM-IO would accept a peace deal that would mean a surrender for the once powerful rebel group at its onset.

“It is an illusion to expect the SPLM/SPLA (IO) to accept an agreement that would be surrender in disguise, our civil population may not be “graduates”, but they are not stupid, they know what a bad agreement is. This is a people’s war, we are not the ones fighting the war and except for a just negotiated settlement, the war will not stop. The Taban/Ezekiel debacle should be a lesson,” he said in the social media  message.

Mabior said the ongoing peace agreement, even signed by the SPLM-IO and other opposition groups under duress and intimidation, will not stop the fighting and as such the war will continue because it does not addressed the root causes of the conflict.

“Even if we are captured, killed or forced to sign a bad agreement and the root causes are not addressed, then war will continue. If the provisions of the agreement are violated, the war will continue, if the elections at the end if the transition are rigged, the war will resume, that is if it even stops during the implementation,” he further said.
