December 13,2021—South Sudan’s Information Minister, Michael Makuei Lueth, said changing the country’s name is not a problem but said there are other necessities that need to be done first.
On Saturday, during the launch of the SPLM-IO General Secretariat in Juba, First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny suggested that the country should adopt the name “People’s Republic of Sudan” because the name South Sudan is not a name but it’s just a direction.
In response to Machar’s suggestion Makuei Lueth, who is the government’s spokesman, said changing the country’s name to a suitable name that matches the National attributes is not a problem despite the fact that Machar was the very person who suggested the name “South Sudan” before but argued that there most important issue is to focus on at the moment than changing name.
“During the Independent period, Dr. Riek Machar Teny was the one who head the Transition Committee and he didn’t suggest anything like “People’s Republic of Sudan”, Makuei said
“The name has no problem because we are part of the Sudan’s history from the time of Britain and Condominium era until 1956 when Sudan got her Independent. We should name ourselves “People’s Republic of Sudan” because our brothers from the north refused to name themselves “North Sudan”, Makuei said, adding that Machar should register his political party first so that he presents the motion before parliament for more deliberations.
“The name South Sudan is not the problem, change your political organization’s name and table your motion in Parliament”, said Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth in a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia.
He said there are a lot to focus on right now such as issues to do with service delivery to the citizens and the security arrangement which has been the major concern of all.
” But now we have critical issues to take care of Such as Peace, Delivery of services to our people, build roads And bridges and infact the general security of our nation hence we should debate the way forward regarding “South Sudan and People’s Republic of Sudan” subject., he lamented.
The top government mouthpiece emphasized that, FVP Dr. Riek Machar Teny should focus on his Political Organization before the National issues, he added that we are soon going to elections and IO need a name like any other political parties in the country.
” SPLM IO need to be registered as a political party for it to participate in general elections in 2023. So when you change your political organization’s name hence we will debate on the name you have suggested”, Makuei said as respond to Machar’s suggestion.
