September 10,2021—South Sudan’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mayik Ayii Deng, a little known politician who has been at the center of controversies during his short-lived tenure in Kiir’s office, has taken oath of office to serve the country as the foreign affairs minister.
During swearing-in ceremony, Mayik acknowledged that the country is facing tremendous diplomatic setbacks but he promised to fix them.
Hon. Mayik challenged the government to implement the revitalized peace agreement by working together in the best interest of the country.
“As a Government, we have a diplomatic challenge and we need to join hands to collectively implement the Revitalised Peace Agreement”, he said.
In a statement released by Presidential Press Unit, President Salva Kiir Mayardit presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Mayiik Ayii Deng as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to the statement, the swearing-in ceremony was administered in the Office of the President by the Deputy Chief Justice Dr. John Gatwech Lul.
“Speaking after the oath taking ceremony, country’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit directed Hon Mayiik Ayii Deng to reform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and to work according to the policies of SPLM as the ruling party”, the statement reads.
Kiir Mayardit urged Hon Mayiik Ayii Deng to address the issue of payment of Diplomatic staff, payment of subscription fees to regional and international organizations.
He was appointed yesterday through a republican decree that was read out on the state owned channel (SSBC).
Mayik is replacing Hon. Beatrice Khamisa Wani, the wife of the Vice president for Economic Cluster, James Wani Igga.
At the time of her replacement, Hon. Beatrice was on a government mission in Cairo, Egypt, and it’s yet to be confirmed if she would be reassigned to a different position once she returns.
