August 29th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s former army chief and leader of South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) General Paul Malong Awan said on Thursday that main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar is not a part of the problem in in the country.
Malong was speaking to Nyamilepedia in an exclusive interview this mornng from the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The former army chief said instead of calling for Machar who is not in power to leave, President Salva Kiir should be the one to abdicate.
“Riek [Machar] is not in the power, so, people cannot talk of Riek to leave. The one in power is [President] Salva [Kiir] and Salva have to leave,” General Malong said.
Malong stressed that South Sudanese should be the key decision makers toanswer questions such as ‘who to lead’ them saying Machar should not be an exception to alternatives to be chosen.
“If the South Sudanese ask for Riek to come as President, that will be up to them,” Malong said.
“Riek is out of question. You cannot bring Riek now into this situation to say that Riek and Salva have to leave because Riek is not in power,” Malong added.
