April 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), has renewed its call for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to release its leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny from a house arrest in Khartoum.
Machar who has remained in the Italian capital Rome following a spiritual retreat that was also attended by President Salva Kiir and Rebecca Garang last week has been under house arrest in the Sudanese capital Khartoum since the signing of a revitalized peace agreement in September last year.
Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Saturday, the SPLM-IO Director of National Committee for Information and Public Relations, Puok Both Balaung, said for IGAD to demonstrate impartiality, they must release Machar to engage in the peace dissemination process and to mobilize for support.
“On this note, we reiterate our call upon the IGAD to demonstrate its impartiality and release Dr. Riek Machar to allow him to move freely with view to engage in the dissemination and implementation of the R-ARCSS together with his brother President Salva Kiir and other stakeholders,” Baluang said.
