May 7, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, has rejected a statement by president Salva Kiir’s office saying that the parties have reached an agreement on the allocation of states.
This evening, the presidency issued a statement that President Salva Kiir and mains armed opposition leader Machar who is also the First Vice President, met at the state house J1 and resolved to divide the states.
The statement said Kiir will take six states of Unity, Warrap, Eastern Equatoria, Central Equatoria, Northern Bahr el-Ghazal and Lakes.
It also purported that Machar’s SPLM-IO have agreed to take Western Equatoria, Jonglei state and Western Bahr el-Ghazal.
South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) would take the state of Upper Nile.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this evening, Nyenagwek Kuol, a senior member of the SPLM-IO and a close aide to Machar said the statement was issued without the knowledge of the group.
She said that Machar was preparing a statement to reject what he said is a unilateral decision by President Salva Kiir.
For his part, the SPLM-IO spokesman and South Sudan’s deputy minister of interior Mabior Garang de’Mabior said in a brief Facebook message that the SPLM-IO did not take part in the purported agreement.
