Machar’s SPLM-IO condemns attack against civilians near Wau, Mapel

March 18th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO led by the country’s former First Vice-President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, condemned on Monday attack against civilians near Mapel in Lakes state and near Wau.

On Saturday, there were reports that a pro-government youth group dressed in civilian clothes attacked civilians in Mapel over the weekend.

There were also reports that similar attack occurred near Wau town on Sunday killing scores.

In a statement issued on Monday, the SPLM-IO Director of Information, Puok Both Baluang said his group condemns the attack in strongest term.

“The SPLM/A (IO) condemns in the strongest terms possible the heinous attack by pro-Government forces dressed as civilians, on civilians in Dang Achan Village near Mapel at about 5:00 am on Saturday, March 16,2019, results in 15 civilians killed, 21 injured, 13 children kidnapped and 6 females were abducted,” he said.

“Similar attack occurred on Maranyi Displaced Persons’ Camp of Kwajina County, Wau State on Sunday, March 17, 2019, which claimed approximately 15 civilians lives and 20 injured,” he added.

Puok urged peace monitors to carry out investigation into the attacks which he labelled as “wanton.”

“Therefore, we call upon CTSAMM and UNMISS and other relevant authorities to investigate these wanton attacks and prosecute those responsible promptly,” he added.
